Saint Joseph Sebastian Pelczar, Patron of Educators and Universities

saint joseph sebastian pelczar patron of educators

Priest, bishop, professor, dean, writer, social worker, doctor of theology, canon lawyer, and saint.  Indeed, this great Polish man wasted no time in building God's kingdom on earth.

Raised by good Christian parents, the young Joseph discerned to be a priest while he was a junior in high school.  In his diary he wrote, "Earth ideals fade, I see the ideal of life in dedication, and the ideal of sacrifice – in the priesthood".

His tireless zeal for serving God was expressed in many ways.  After his ordination, he taught for many years, taking special care of his students.  He was a friend to young people, encouraging them to draw closer to God through devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and frequent partaking of the sacraments.  Despite ill health, he devoted much of his time to works of mercy such as sheltering the homeless, establishing orphanages, soup kitchens, scholarships for seminarians, and libraries. He wrote over a thousand books.  Along with Blessed Klara Szczesna, he co-founded the Sister Servants of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, an organization for young women.

"There is no greater happiness as to be the object of love of the Merciful Heart." - Saint Joseph Sebastian Pelczar

He is the patron of educators, universities, schools, students, and the Sister Servants of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Today March 28th is his feast day.  Saint Joseph Sebastian Pelczar, pray for us!
